Extending for 40 miles along the Oregon Coast from Florence to Coos Bay, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America, and is part of the Siuslaw National Forest. It offers wind-sculpted sand dunes towering to 500 feet above sea level and provides numerous recreational opportunities including off-highway vehicle use, hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and camping. Dogs on a leash are welcome, but are not permitted in beach areas closed to dogs during snowy plover nesting season (March 15 – September 15).
