Located at 3729 County Road 98, Bridgeport, AL 35740, Russell Cave National Monument serves to protect one of the most complete records of human occupation in the Southeast U.S. Russell Cave has an exceptionally large main entrance, which was used for thousands of years as a shelter by cultures of prehistoric Indians. Through elaborate excavations in the 1950’s and 60’s, archeologists were able to date the time people lived here from about 10,000 BCE to 1650 CE. Activities include touring the cave shelter, exploring the 115 species of birds that live on Montague Mountain, and hiking the 1.2-mile trail just off the scenic boardwalk to get to the cave shelter. Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed at the park. The boardwalk trail and the hiking trail are both open to dogs and their human visitors.
