Located in 32651 OR-19, Kimberly, OR 97848, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument preserves a world class record of plant and animal evolution, changing climate, and past ecosystems that span over 40 million years. The park consists of more than 14,000 acres within three separate units located in eastern Oregon: Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno. The three units of the monument hold some of the best fossil bearing locations within the larger John Day Fossil Beds, which cover most of eastern Oregon. Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in developed areas (such as picnic areas, overlooks, etc.) and along hiking trails, but are not permitted inside government buildings.
