Generally known as the Appalachian Trail, Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a marked hiking trail in the Eastern United States extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The trail is estimated around 2,200 miles long, and is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. Dogs are allowed everywhere on the Trail except in three areas: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina; Trailside Museum and Wildlife Center in Bear Mountain State Park, New York; and Baxter State Park, Maine. Dogs must be leashed on the forty percent of the Trail that uses National Park Service-administered lands. Pack animals are not allowed on the trail; this includes horses, donkeys, llamas and alpacas.
