Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park. Located in the Kona District on the Island of Hawaii, the park preserves, protects, and interprets traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture. Several restored trails include about one mile of the Māmalahoa Trail. It was built in the mid-19th century, and evolved over the years into the Hawaii Belt Road which encircles the entire island. The coastal trail is part of the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. Dogs are allowed in the Kaloko picnic area and on designated, maintained park trails and beaches. Pets are allowed to swim in coastal waters but must always be on leash, even when swimming. Pets are prohibited from entering Kaloko Fishpond, ‘Aimakapā Fishpond, and any anchialine pool.
